Press Release
5/21 -
6/20/2004
Opening Reception: 5/21, Friday, 7-11pm
Brooklyn, NY - May 10th, 2004 - About Glamour, Inc. presents
artwork by Koichiro Takagi & Megu Mutt in a 2-persons show,"Texas Soap".
Although the artists were strangers to each other and never had a show together
prior to this event,
because of their incredible spontaneity and undeniable creativity, they are
able to create one-of-a-kind collaborative art space.
Koichiro Takagi started out studying silkscreen and continued his study in the
masters program at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. His move to
N.Y. gave him an opportunity to reflect on his artwork and to decide to make
a shift in his medium and become a painter. On the other hand, Megu Mutt, studied
art and taught art in Kyoto Art University. She moved to N.Y. and pursued her
study even further. She, too, is a multi talented artist Ð she paints, creates
silkscreen and 3-dimensional artwork. Both artists have been extremely successful
and held numerous shows in N.Y., and are planning to have many more shows all
over the world.
As mentioned, the artists did not know each other before the show; however,
they had more than a few things in common. One is certainly their love for Rock
Õn Roll. From the artwork of both artists, viewers may hear the sounds and beats
of ÒBlood Sugar Sex MagicÓ. ÒTattooÓ is another common theme in the show. Animals,
such as a monkey and a pig are tattooed by the artists in their paintings and
artwork.
Takagi uses impressive and original combination of colors including fluorescent
colors in slightly darker shades. Partly due to the choice of colors in his
artwork, the viewers may feel instability, uncertainty and unconformity, and,
that is the artistÕs intention. However, because of his choice of motifs, like
animals and children, his painting settles somewhere between cute and grotesque.
Megu also adores and uses dogs as her motif, and they are naturally humorous
and sweet. However, the colors she chooses are simple and the bold selection
of colors enable her artwork to look aggressive; she tends to work in two tones
and the main color is usually black. The way two of the artists approach their
arts are significantly different; however, Koichiro and Megu both got such a
kick out of the power of collaboration this time for the show, and as a result,
another common theme, besides Rock Õn Roll and tattoos, were shared Ð their
love toward living creatures.
The successful artists, Koichiro Takagi and Megu Mutt, will show the viewers
their twisted love toward the friends of humankind with Rock'n Roll banging
in the air. "Texas Soap" will be held at About Glamour Inc. from May 21(Friday)
until June 20, 2004. The opening reception is at the gallery of About Glamour
from 7pm to 11pm on May 21, 2004.
