[アーティストステイトメント]

I create narratives through painting and sculpture that explore the semiotics of the epic through referencing mythology, fairy tales, and other fantasy scenarios. I abstract particular people and things into imaginary environments that we subconsciously desire for their childhood dream material (castles and woods), in order to conjure a vague familiar of the conscious self in the form of a distant longing. The forest, and organic forms, including pods, sacks, and seeds have a fetishistic relevance in my work and mass themselves inside of it in order to explain ideas of uncomfortable growth, appropriation and metamorphosis. The frequent appearance of adolescents or the young in my work references the anthropological parallel that implies that myths and fairy tales depict initiation rites, a vessel of metamorphosis which we are individually familiar with through different experiences. The human subjects have been severed from their natural home and are placed in the face of a harrowing unnatural 'nature.' This relationship further clarifies the beauty of the documented and distant objects, and more clearly contextualizes them as curios of the imagination. The juxtaposition of these sources foreign to each other is not meant to analyze a literal scenario but an overreaching association between things and ideas themselves, of a tension between the decrepit and enchanting.

In the work on view, six naked and abandoned girls stand in gang formation amidst a thick and lively woods. The silent communication that occurs in the painting is emblematic of the communication found in my other works: the girls look straight out of the painting in mixed emotions of assertiveness and vulnerability, their hands clasped and poised in undefined but seemingly deliberate ways. The uneasiness of the situation is amplified by the way the girls appear pasted into the woods, more as cutouts placed over their environment than integrated into it.
