It often seems as though the older people get the more they forget how much they understood when they were children. Adults do not comprehend that children are miniatures of themselves with a little less time under their belts. Adults are always trying to "protect" children from various aspects of life that they deem evil, but fail to recognize that children are exposed to everything and have their own reactions and emotions. If a childユs parents dislike each other, before the words are said, a child feels this. A child can tell whether or not a person is genuine and can sense when an older person has dishonorable intentions.

My work deals with children and their knowledge and participation in the not so hidden world of sex. We try to keep the idea of sex away from children while icons with sexual undertones stare us in the face everyday. Characters such as Pee-Wee Herman and Willy Wonka, which are geared towards children, appear innocent but are undeniably perverse. My paintings combine an "All-American" girl with one of these icons in a surreal setting in order to convey the uncomfortable feeling understood by the younger audience.

Not only do we try to hide sex from children but also we think they do not feel as sexual beings. The only things children can control are their toys and they use them in exploration. Barbie gets stripped down and put in bed with Ken and sometimes Skipper. Or children use other toys, performing sexual acts between them. My other paintings place a naked child in the presence of a toy, creating a feeling of uneasiness. It is unclear whether or not the toy is in control of the child or vice versa. Either way it is clear that the children understand what sex is about but are unsure how to approach the issue.
