CHI AFLOAT!
by Sanna Myrttinen

September 3 Ð September 26, 2004
Opening Reception: September 3, Fri. 7-11pm

BROOKLYN - The painter, Sanna Myrttinen, was born in Helsinki, Finland. She grew up in Switzerland, Finland, the U.S., and Germany. After earning a Masters Degree in Forestry from the University of Helsinki and an international career in the forest industry that involved working and traveling through out most of Europe and abroad, she decided in 2002 to take a major turn and pursue a life as an artist and teacher. Painting has always been an important part of her life and after solely having painted figurative motifs with oil for the past fifteen years, she has gradually become more experimental through her studies at Swedish artist Ake Arph's studio in Stockholm and her formal art education at the faculty of Arts and Arts Education at the University of Vaxjo. Her artwork shows her international upbringing, abundant experiences of various fields and her travels to South East Asia.

CHI is the energy and positive life force in and around us. A life filled with positive chi is, according to the ancient Chinese, a life full of good fortune. Chi is said to flow slowly and to increase in places where there is a sense of harmony. "CHI AFLOAT!" presents a series of works that combine elements from the 4000+ year-old teaching of Feng Shui (a Chinese method of furnishing and decorating to enhance the flow of chi and harmony in our lives). All of the works have a symbolic value, such as bamboo for long life and water for prosperity, and are filled with positive energy that she hopes will even spread to the audience.

She is fascinated with form and color of the world around her. She feels joy in challenging to simplify a motif to its core lines and to see what impact a simple line or the repetitious use of a form can have on the canvas. Her travels and the nature around her countryside studio are a major source of inspiration and she is always on the lookout for exotic and interesting forms to take back home. By using collage, mixed media and color on a layer-on-layer technique, she likes to experiment placing simplified form into a new and interesting context.
