"Unicorn Travesties"
-A Solo Exhibition of Coral Silverman-

1/11 - 2/17/2008
Opening Reception: 1/11/2008, Friday, 7-10pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brooklyn - AG Gallery is pleased to present "Unicorn Travesties", a solo exhibition of a Brooklyn-based artist, Coral Silverman. The exhibition will be comprised of her gouache drawings inspired by the medieval Unicorn Tapestries.

Re-imagining the Unicorn Tapestry set in the modern world, and using girlish, eye-catching bright colors, she juxtaposes elements taken straight from the tapestries, such as the unicorn and floral patterning, with signifiers of the modern world. Extracting floral elements from their "mille fleur" backgrounds, she subtly inserts various pieces of urban refuse within the works, such as cigarette butts, soda cans, smashed televisions, etc.

In her "Unicorn Travesties" series, she reflects the environment destruction that human beings have been causing. The unicorn that is depicted in her work becomes a symbol of nature and wildness. Young boys dressed in hooded sweatshirts are carrying welding guns to pursue the unicorn. More than for pleasure, they are trying to slay the unicorn that stands in the way of their unsustainable consumption. At once sweet and humorous, yet violent, her work seeks to explore man's current tenuous relationship to nature.

Coral Silverman received BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2001. She has had a solo show at the Fringe Salon in NYC, and many other group shows in San Francisco, CA, Los Angels, CA, and Brooklyn, NY.

"Unicorn Travesties" will be on view at AG Gallery through January 11th, 2008. The gallery is located at 103 North 3rd St. (between Berry and Wythe Ave.)
Hours: Sun. 12-8pm Mon.-Sat. 12-10pm
