Matthew Schenning Solo Exhibition - SUBURBAN RENEWAL

Brooklyn - AG Gallery is pleased to present SUBURBAN RENEWAL, a solo exhibition of Brooklyn-based artist Matthew Schenning. The exhibition will consist of a collection of photography as well as sculptures based on suburban landscapes and people that are in the process of moving into the new phase.

Matthew Schenning uses his personal history and surroundings as a subject to examine the change and transformation we make to the world around us. In this 21st Century, the globalization and ever changing technological development has been changing the basics of human life and its environment dramatically. There is almost no place that is totally "Natural" but "Artificial" at some level. Shcenning considers time and space where it's in-between these "Natural" and "Artificial" moment, revealing the process of change and transformation of place and human being.

In this exhibition, SUBURBAN RENEWAL, Schenning introduces his hometown and friends that are in transition from one place to the other. They show a feeling of wander in the beauty of suburban life; a person who just moved into a new house and standing in his new yard with the white picket fence, brand new keys lying on the table with the stuffed boxes, the dead end of the highway under construction in the middle of nowhere, a guy on the wheelchair who rides a ban for the first time after the accident. Capturing these real places and people in the staged manner, Schenning creates a mixture of documentary and personal story "in a constant state of flux between something and nothing."

Matthew Schenning received a BA from University of Maryland College Park in 1999. He had his first solo exhibition in New York at School of Visual Arts. His work has been included in a wide range of group exhibitions in New York and other cities in US. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

SUBURBAN RENEWAL will be on view at AG Gallery through March 12th, 2006.
